Delicious healthy homemade ice creams

Spring is the perfect time to pull your Ninja CREAMi off the shelf, stock up on a few affordable mix-ins, and start building pints that actually fit your keto or low-carb lifestyle. The problem with most “protein ice cream” recipes you see online is that they quietly lean on regular pudding mixes, flavoured protein powders loaded with fillers, or sweeteners that spike your blood sugar faster than a candy bar.

This guide takes a different approach.

We are building every pint around three humble pantry heroes: Kraft Sugar-Free Pudding Mix, Kraft Sugar-Free Jell-O Mix, and Jordan’s Skinny Mixes Zero-Sugar Syrups. Add a scoop of your favourite protein powder and a base liquid, and you have a full pint of creamy, freezer-ready dessert for a fraction of the price of a pint at the health food store.

Ready to build your pint rotation? Let’s get into it.

Why These Three Ingredients Work So Well Together

Before we get to the flavours, it is worth understanding why this trio is so effective. Each ingredient plays a specific role in the finished pint.

Sugar-free pudding mix is the texture hero.

When a Ninja CREAMi base freezes rock-solid overnight, it can come out of the machine chalky, crumbly, or icy. A small amount of instant sugar-free pudding mix, around 5-8 grams or roughly one tablespoon, acts as a stabilizer and emulsifier. It binds the liquid and protein together, giving the machine something to work with so you get that smooth, creamy scoop instead of a pile of frozen powder. Kraft’s Sugar-Free Pudding & Pie Filling mixes come in several flavours and are one of the most affordable texture upgrades in the keto pantry.

Sugar-free Jell-O mix is the flavour amplifier.

A few grams of sugar-free gelatin dissolved into your base liquid adds a bold, concentrated fruit or dessert flavour that no amount of extract can match. It also contributes a tiny bit of setting power, which adds body to the finished pint. Kraft Sugar-Free Jell-O packs cost very little, so building a whole collection of flavours is genuinely budget-friendly.

Jordan’s Skinny Mixes Syrups are the finishing touch.

These zero-calorie, zero-sugar syrups give you coffeehouse-style flavour depth, from Salted Caramel and Vanilla to Barista Hazelnut and beyond. A 30 ml splash stirred into your base before freezing rounds out any pint and layers in a flavour profile you simply cannot get from dry mixes alone. A single bottle covers weeks’ worth of pints.

Together, the total cost per pint works out to well under two dollars in mix-ins. That is a dessert win by any measure.

The Base Formula

Every pint in this guide starts from the same foundation. Once you have this formula memorized, building new flavours is just a matter of swapping the pudding flavour, the Jell-O mix, and the syrup.

The Keto CREAMi Base

  • 300 ml unsweetened almond milk (or Fairlife 2% for more protein)
  • 1 scoop (25-30g) unflavoured or vanilla protein powder
  • 1 tablespoon (5-8g) Kraft Sugar-Free Pudding Mix
  • 1-2 teaspoons Swerve Natural Sugar Replacement, if you prefer a sweeter base
  • Optional: 1 pinch of salt to sharpen the overall flavour

How to build it:

  1. Add all ingredients to a blender and blend for 15-20 seconds until completely smooth. No lumps of pudding mix should remain.
  2. Taste the liquid. It should taste a little too sweet and a little too flavourful because the freezing process mutes both sweetness and flavour. Adjust now if needed.
  3. Pour into your Ninja CREAMi pint container, seal the lid, and freeze on a flat surface for a minimum of 18-24 hours.
  4. When ready, remove the lid, attach the pint to the Creamerizer bowl, and press the Lite Ice Cream button for the first spin.
  5. Check the texture. It may look powdery after the first pass; that is normal. Add 1 tablespoon of almond milk and press Re-Spin for a second pass.
  6. Your pint is ready to eat straight from the container, or add mix-ins using the Mix-In function.

A quick note on the Re-Spin step: do not skip it. Most keto-friendly bases need at least two passes because the lower fat content means the base freezes harder than a traditional ice cream mix. The Re-Spin pass is where the magic actually happens.

3 Mix-Ins That Make Any Pint Creamy

If your pints have been coming out icy or crumbly, the fix is usually one of these three things.

  1. The pudding mix. This is the most common missing ingredient in “healthy” CREAMi recipes. Even a single tablespoon of Kraft Sugar-Free Pudding Mix transforms the texture. It works like a stabilizer, keeping the base from separating into large ice crystals overnight.
  2. A fat source. A splash of heavy cream, one to two tablespoons, or a spoonful of full-fat coconut cream stirred into your base adds the fat molecules that give real ice cream its smooth texture. This is especially important if you are using a water-based or low-fat base.
  3. The Re-Spin. Adding 1 tablespoon of liquid before the Re-Spin gives the Creamerizer paddle something to work the frozen base into. Think of it as a second emulsification pass that brings everything together.

Combine all three and you will rarely need more than two passes to get a scoop-worthy pint.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need protein powder for this to work?
No, but it helps. The six flavour builds above work with or without protein powder. Without it, your pint will be lighter and slightly less creamy. If you do add protein, an unflavoured whey or a vanilla casein blend tends to work best because it does not compete with the flavour of the pudding or syrup.

Can I use any brand of sugar-free pudding mix?
Yes, though Kraft’s formulation dissolves cleanly and has a flavour profile that does not taste artificial or overly sweet. That is why it is the go-to here, and The Low Carb Grocery carries a solid selection at a price point that makes stocking up easy.

What if my pint freezes unevenly?
Always freeze on a flat freezer shelf and make sure the liquid surface is level before closing the lid. If your freezer runs warmer on one side, rotate the pint halfway through the freeze time.

Can I make these dairy-free?
Absolutely. Swap almond milk for coconut milk, skip the heavy cream, and use a vegan protein powder. The Jell-O and pudding mixes are not dairy products, so those stay in the recipe the same way.
